Criminal law is one of our primary areas of practice. While the statutes (laws) that make certain acts criminal in Florida are well defined, many people may not know just what makes a crime and what does not. We have all heard the expression that ignorance of the law is no excuse. What this means is that you may commit a crime without knowing it is a crime – and, even though you did not know it was a crime, you can still legally be prosecuted for it in criminal court. The same applies when you visit a foreign country. You should make yourself aware of the laws of that country before visiting there. Just because a certain act is legal where you live, do not assume it is legal everywhere.
