Domestic Violence Increases in Orlando

Domestic violence is an issue that local law enforcement takes very seriously. In fact, if a person calls police claiming domestic violence, often police are required to arrest the alleged abuser. However, while domestic violence should never be taken lightly, it’s important to remember that everyone is innocent until proven guilty in this country.

The number of people facing a serious domestic violence charge seems to have spiked in Orange County in the last few weeks, with several homicides and suicides resulting from domestic disputes. Since Sept. 27, five victims are dead and two suspects committed suicide after being charged. Police have no reason to give for the sudden upsurge in violent domestic crimes.

Several of the victims were shot during arguments. One man was stabbed during a card game. One woman was stabbed in front of her 8-year-old daughter. Many of the situations involved suspects who had no police records and couples with no history of police intervention for domestic disputes.

Domestic abuse is often a complex situation, and many people who are charged with abuse have lived in mutually abusive situations or experienced abuse as a child. A criminal defense attorney can explain the rights of a person who has been charged with domestic abuse and help the individual find safe and effective ways to deal with abusive situations. With the help of a criminal defense attorney, domestic abuse perpetrators and victims can get the help they need to change their lives.
